Ferro vanadium FeV 70, characterized by high carbon and low nitrogen content, appears as grey metallic lumps and is engineered to maximize steel hardening and wear resistance. As a member of the FeV alloy family, this Iron Vanadium grade typically contains around 70% vanadium, with carbon levels adjusted to reinforce carbide formation while nitrogen is kept minimal to avoid unwanted nitride embrittlement.
The grey metallic surface reflects its dense, oxidation-controlled structure, making it visually distinct from brighter alloys. In steelmaking, ferrovanadium FeV 70 acts as a powerful micro-alloying agent. Vanadium combines with carbon to form fine vanadium carbides (VC) uniformly dispersed in the matrix. These particles hinder grain growth during thermal cycles and strongly pin dislocations, raising yield strength, hardness, and abrasion resistance.
The low nitrogen specification is critical: excess nitrogen can form coarse vanadium nitrides, degrading toughness. This makes FeV 70 especially suited for producing hardened steels used in mining tools, excavator teeth, and wear plates where long service life under abrasive conditions is essential.
Being in lump form aids controlled addition to furnaces or ladles, and the dense structure ensures slow, even dissolution, preventing localized compositional spikes. Vanadium Iron Alloy of this type is compatible with electric arc, basic oxygen, and induction steelmaking routes. As part of FeVanadium alloy solutions, it also supports case-hardening processes, improving surface hardness while retaining core toughness.
