Silicon carbide is widely used in steelmaking because it contains silicon elements that can decompose in molten steel and react with oxygen and metal oxides in the molten steel to generate carbon monoxide and silicon-containing slag. Silicon carbide can be used as a purification agent for smelting steel. That is, it is used as a deoxidizer and cast iron structure improver in steelmaking.
