Amorphous silicon is almost insoluble in all inorganic and organic acids, including hydrofluoric acid, but is soluble in a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. Concentrated sodium hydroxide solution can dissolve amorphous silicon, releasing hydrogen gas. Crystalline silicon is relatively inactive, even at high temperatures, but not with oxygen, it is also insoluble in any kind of inorganic and organic acids, but can be dissolved in nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid mixture of acids and concentrated sodium hydroxide solution.
