What is metallic silicon? Classification and application knowledge of metallic silicon


Metallic silicon, also known as crystalline silicon or industrial silicon, is primarily used as an additive for non-ferrous alloys. Silicon is a non-metallic element that appears gray with a metallic luster, and it is hard and brittle. Silicon accounts for about 26% of the Earth's crust by mass; its relative atomic mass is 28.8, density is 2.33 g/cm³, melting point is 1410°C, boiling point is 2355°C, and resistivity is 2140 Ω·m.

 

According to the content of iron, aluminum, and calcium in metallic silicon, it can be divided into different grades such as 553, 441, 411, 421, 3303, 3305, 2202, 2502, 1501, and 1101.

 

Additional products of metallic silicon include silicon micropowder, edge silicon, black silicon, and metallic silicon slag. Among them, silicon micropowder, also known as silicon powder, fine silicon powder, or silicon dust, is widely used in the refractory material and concrete industries.

 

In industry, metallic silicon is usually produced by the reduction of silicon dioxide with carbon in an electric furnace. The chemical reaction equation is: SiO2 + 2C → Si + 2CO. The purity of the silicon produced in this way is 97-98%, called metallic silicon. After melting and recrystallization, impurities are removed with acid to obtain metallic silicon with a purity of 99.7-99.8%. The main component of metallic silicon is silicon, so it has similar properties to silicon. Silicon has two allotropes: amorphous silicon and crystalline silicon. Amorphous silicon is a gray-black powder, which is actually a microcrystal. Crystalline silicon has a diamond crystal structure and semiconductor properties, with a melting point of 1410°C, boiling point of 2355°C, Mohs hardness of 7, and is brittle.

 

Amorphous silicon is chemically reactive and can burn vigorously in oxygen. It reacts with non-metals such as halogens, nitrogen, and carbon at high temperatures, and can also react with metals such as magnesium, calcium, and iron to form silicides. Amorphous silicon is almost insoluble in all inorganic and organic acids, including hydrofluoric acid, but it can dissolve in a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Concentrated sodium hydroxide solution can dissolve amorphous silicon, releasing hydrogen gas. Crystalline silicon is less reactive and does not combine with oxygen even at high temperatures. It is also insoluble in any inorganic or organic acids but can dissolve in a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid and concentrated sodium hydroxide solution.
