What Is the Role of 80 % Ferrovanadium in Industry?

80 % ferrovanadium (FeV80) is an iron–vanadium alloy containing approximately 78–82 % vanadium by weight, with the balance mainly iron and small amounts of deoxidizers (Al, Si). It is the highest commercial vanadium grade, offering maximum vanadium content per unit mass.

Key Industrial Roles
  1. Premium Alloy Steel Production
    • Used in manufacturing high‑speed steels, tool steels, and aerospace alloys where a small addition of FeV80 delivers a large vanadium input.
    • Vanadium forms fine, stable carbides/nitrides that greatly increase hardness, wear resistance, and red‑hot strength.
  2. Nickel‑Base & Titanium Superalloys
    • Added to superalloys for gas turbines, jet engines, and spacecraft components.
    • Enhances high‑temperature creep resistance and refines grain structure.
  3. Specialty Stainless Steels
    • In nuclear and chemical equipment, FeV80 ensures corrosion resistance and strength at elevated temperatures.
  4. Battery & Chemical Industries (Indirect)
    • High‑purity vanadium from FeV80 can be extracted for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) and catalyst production, although this is a smaller market segment.
Advantages of FeV80
  • High vanadium concentration → fewer kilograms needed per tonne of steel, reducing handling and melting costs in niche applications.
  • Low tramp element content → cleaner melt, important for critical applications (aerospace, nuclear).
  • Excellent carbide former → superior wear resistance in tools and dies.
Typical Applications Table
Industry Application Benefit of FeV80
Tool & high‑speed steel Drill bits, cutting tools, dies Maximize hardness & hot hardness
Aerospace Turbine blades, landing gear High‑temp strength, creep resistance
Nuclear/chemical Corrosion‑resistant vessels Clean alloy, high strength
Superalloys Jet engine parts Fine grain, high‑temp stability
VRFB (via reprocessing) Energy storage Source of high‑purity V
