How Is Silicomanganese Produced?

Silicomanganese (SiMn) is produced mainly through carbothermic reduction in electric arc furnaces (EAFs). Here's a simplified outline:

Raw Materials:

  • •
Manganese ore (rich in Mn, often from deposits)
  • •
Quartz (silica) – source of silicon
  • •
Ferromanganese slag or iron scrap – to adjust iron content
  • •
Coke or coal – acts as a reducing agent and carbon source

Process Steps:

  1. 1.
    Charging:
The raw materials are loaded into an electric arc furnace.
  2. 2.
    Heating & Reduction:
High temperatures (~1600–1700°C) are used to reduce manganese and silicon oxides using carbon:
    • •
      MnO₂ → Mn (reduced)
    • •
      SiO₂ → Si (reduced)
  3. 3.
    Melting & Alloy Formation:
The reduced elements combine with iron (from ore/scrap) to form silicomanganese alloy.
  4. 4.
    Tapping & Casting:
The molten alloy is tapped from the furnace and cast into ingots or ladles for cooling and transport.
