Ferrosilicon is an alloy called silicon (SiO2) that contains small amounts of aluminum (Al203) and many other elements. Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon with an average silicon content between 15% and 90% by weight. This ferroalloy is used to manufacture different varieties of steel for different purposes. Ferrosilicon is used as an alloying element in the manufacture of spring steel, transformer steel and other alloyed steels. Ferrosilicon is an alloy that helps maintain the desired level of carbon in steel and makes it usable for different purposes.
Ferrosilicon is used as a source of silicon for reducing metal oxides and deoxidizing steel and other ferrous alloys. This prevents the loss of carbon from molten steel, ferromanganese, gelatin, calcium silicide and many other materials for the same purpose. It can be used to make other ferroalloys. Ferrosilicon is also used to make silicon, black silicon alloys for corrosion and high temperature resistance, and silicon steel for motor and transformer cores. In cast iron production, iron is inoculated with ferrosilicon to accelerate graphitization. In arc welding, ferrosilicon can be found in some electrode coatings.
